Wayland man killed in fiery single-car crash with tree


A 43-year-old Wayland man was killed in a fiery single-car crash in the town early Saturday morning, according to police.

Wayland police and firefighters responded to 41 Shaw Drive for a report of a car crash at 1:36 a.m., police said in a press release. There, they found that a Kia EV6 had crashed into a tree and caught fire.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV became trapped inside, police said. Firefighters worked quickly to put out the fire and get the driver out of the vehicle, but he was declared dead the scene.

It took firefighters 40 minutes to put out the fire using two hose lines, police said. The scene was not cleared until around 6 a.m.

Wayland police and the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office are still investigating the crash, police said.

“This was a truly tragic incident that resulted in the loss of one of our dear community members,” Fire Chief Neil McPherson said in the release. “On behalf of the Wayland Police and Fire Departments, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.”
