Politics LIVE updates: Anthony Albanese unveils stage 3 tax changes; Australian of the

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says everything the government has done has been about managing “competing forces” and working with monetary policy not against it, claiming it has room in the budget to provide more support to Australians.

In his speech before the National Press Club, Albanese said families budgets had been under pressure because of the jump in inflation, the economic aftershock of the pandemic and wars leading to an “unprecedented” combination of global inflation and damaged supply chains.

Albanese touches on government policy including urgent care clinics, fee-free TAFE, energy bill relief and cheaper childcare, but acknowledges people need more support.

“I understand that the progress we’ve made together is not enough. I recognise – as Treasury analysis confirms – ‘working households have experienced the fastest rise in their cost of living’,” he said.

“That’s why over summer, I asked Treasury and Finance to present us with options to help people with their cost of living, while continuing the fight against inflation.

“Today, I announce that from the 1st of July this year, our government will deliver a tax cut for every Australian taxpayer. All 13.6 million taxpayers, not just some. Everyone who works and pays tax will benefit.”
