ITTF Oceania Cup 2024: Australia’s Finn Luu and Yangzi Liu win titles

Australian table tennis players Finn Luu and Yangzi Liu won the men’s and women’s events, respectively, at the ITTF Oceania Cup 2024 tournament in Jean Noyant Noumea, New Caledonia on Sunday.

World No. 31 Yangzi Liu, the highest-ranked Australian table tennis player in the women’s competition, defeated her 55th-ranked compatriot Minhyung Jee 4-3 (12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 11-2, 7-11, 9-11, 11-9) in the final to win her second successive title at the ITTF Oceania Cup.

The 2024 women’s final was also a rematch of last year’s summit clash with Jee falling short on both occasions. Last year, Liu beat Jee 4-0 in the final.

Earlier in the competition, Liu registered a 4-0 victory over world No. 102 Jocelyn Lam of New Zealand in the semi-finals after receiving a bye in the last eight.

Meanwhile, world No. 147 Priscila Tommy of Vanuatu, who lost to Jee in the semis, took third place after getting the better of Lam. Priscila won the medal match 4-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-7, 11-3).

In the men’s event, world No. 52 Fin Luu beat compatriot Aditya Sareen, ranked 42nd in the world, 4-1 (11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8) to secure the title after finishing runners-up last year.

Luu had secured a comprehensive 4-0 (11-3, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4) win over world No. 154 Alfred Dela Pena of New Zealand in the semi-final after receiving a bye in the quarter-finals.

World No. 40 Nicholas Lum of Australia was the highest-ranked player in the men’s singles category. Lum beat Luu 4-1 in the final last year but finished in third place on Sunday after beating Dela Pena 4-1 (7-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-9, 11-3) in the third-place match.
